It was Hannah Arendt who said, “Only crime and the criminal, it is true, confronts us with the perplexity of radical evil; but only the hypocrite is really rotten to the core.” How true this assertion or otherwise could be proven by real encounter with a hypocrite – some of whom are not far from us. And majority of the world’s problems, our problems, are dependent on hypocrisy, making hypocrite one of the worst enemies of mankind!

A feigning to be what one is not or to believe what one does not; especially the false assumption of an appearance of virtue or religion is hypocrisy. Wiktionary defines hypocrisy as, “the contrivance of a false appearance of virtue or goodness, while concealing real character or inclinations, especially with respect to religious and moral beliefs; hence in general sense, dissimulation, pretense, sham. It is the practice of engaging in the same behavior or activity for which one criticizes another.”In moral psychology, it is the failure to follow one’s own expressed moral rules and principles. It is an act of double-dealing, left-handedness, mealy mouthed, two-faced, unctuous and insincerity. It is all about saying one thing and doing the opposite. This is the root of all evil.

A hypocrite is that person with feigned high principle that claims to have admirable beliefs and feelings but in the real sense he is a reprobate that soils things with hands of deceit and deception. Like oxymoron that is being dressed up while chewing gum, a hypocrite is a pig with lipstick; a misfit that propels others into rivalry, quarrel while sitting atop with hands of emptiness. He is a coward that feeds the flame of discord and division. Through cacophonic tunes, he leads many to evil and set them at war. Every hypocrisy, hypocrite, has a way of making things worse.

In every human institution and every human endeavor, a hypocrite is a meddlesome interloper, a double-faced bigot, a lily-livered fanatic, a wholesome sell-out that would want to be at the middle, invariably fuelling the amber of discord while pretending to mediate between opponents. By commission and omission, he would want to eat his cake and have it, and in so doing, he cares for no one but himself. And when people are quarrelling, he will tell you that no one is at fault! He is a bastard begotten of no one and responsible to no root; a fool that easily betray the bond of brotherhood. He makes things worse, tightens the tie of enmity and deepens the wound of crisis. He feeds fat on division and can go any length to sustain it. In pursuit of his goals, he remains consistent with inconsistency, shifting and sharing loyalty with any government in power. To him, the ends justify the means so anything goes but regrettably he ends up as object of caricature.

Hypocrisy is the easiest way to loose relevance and value. This is because often times, our actions culminate into an assessment factor, the acceptance of which or otherwise speaks volume. Thus, what do people say about you especially in your absence? Yes, what can people say about you and your actions? What interest do you represent? Are you really proud of yourself, and the things you do? Let your conscience be the judge.

Keeping quiet in the face of evil out of cowardice or pretended friendship (in the name of diplomacy) but more out of what is anticipated to be gained at expense of others, mainly the masses, is the worst rape of humanistic fecundity – and this is the trademark of hypocrites. By acts of falsehood, they betray trust, rape common interest and kill collective aspirations.

It was H.D. Thoreau who said that a person is rich in proportion to the number of things which he can leave alone but this is not the case with a hypocrite. A hypocrite, even the rich one, would rather betray everyone to massage his ego and actualize his ultimate desire. More than anything else, we are where we are today because of hypocrisy or what do you expect when those that suppose to speak for you are really the ones speaking, working against you!

No evil doer will go unpunished not even now the that evil men do live with them. Therefore, work for a life not a living even if everyone is doing the opposite. Be principled and make the world a peaceful place to live. Desist from every form of hypocrisy, and more importantly tell every hypocrite you know that there is no meal ticket in this sordid act.

Yes, without someone urging another person into evil, there would be minimal evil. But when people attempt to swallow their teeth along with a sumptuous meal, cannibalism thrives. In search of meal ticket, some men have descended too low to the extent of bathing, dancing naked at the village square at night only to adorn the garb of piety the next day!
