The travesty of justice: when power becomes an instrument of oppression

By Livy-Elcon Emereonye

“They must lead the fight for those basic reforms which alone can preserve the fabric of their societies. Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” — John F. Kennedy

There is perhaps no greater betrayal of humanity than the deliberate perversion of justice. When those entrusted with upholding fairness become agents of oppression, when truth is sacrificed on the altar of personal interest, and when powerful individuals manipulate institutions to punish perceived enemies while shielding their accomplices, society faces one of its gravest afflictions: the travesty of justice.

Justice is the foundation of civilised society. It must be impartial, independent, and blind to wealth, status, political affiliation, and personal influence. When the law is weaponised against the vulnerable and transformed into a shield for the powerful, the moral authority of institutions begins to crumble.

When innocence offers no protection and influence guarantees impunity, justice survives in name only.

The Arrogance of Power and the Manipulation of Justice

One of the most dangerous illusions of power is the belief that it confers immunity. Some individuals, having acquired political influence, financial leverage, or control over institutions, begin to behave as though they are above the law and beyond accountability.

They manipulate processes, distort facts, intimidate opponents, suppress inconvenient truths, and recruit collaborators to advance their selfish interests. Loyalty is rewarded above integrity, silence is preferred to conscience, and dissent is treated as an offence deserving punishment.

The tragedy is not merely that injustice occurs, but that it can be deliberately orchestrated, systematically executed, and institutionally protected.

When justice is captured by private interests, the innocent may be condemned, the guilty may be celebrated, and victims may be denied redress while their tormentors enjoy undeserved protection.

Power without accountability becomes oppression, and justice without impartiality becomes a travesty.

When the Innocent Suffer and the Guilty Escape Accountability

The gravest injustice occurs when people are punished not for what they have done, but for whom they have offended, challenged, or refused to obey.

In such circumstances, evidence becomes secondary to influence, fairness gives way to vendetta, and the pursuit of truth is replaced by a determination to secure a predetermined outcome.

Those who orchestrate such injustice may mistake their victims’ silence for acceptance, their patience for weakness, and delayed accountability for permanent victory. They may believe their networks are impenetrable and their opponents too powerless to challenge them.

But silence is not consent, and the inability to obtain immediate redress does not invalidate a legitimate grievance.

Every manipulated process leaves questions unanswered. Every suppressed truth creates a challenge for accountability. Every deliberate injury carries the risk of consequences that power alone cannot control.

The fact that injustice prevails today does not make it right, nor does the denial of justice extinguish the demand for it tomorrow.

The Conspiracy of Silence and the Complicity of Partners in Crime

Injustice rarely thrives through the actions of one individual alone. It often depends on collaborators: those who conceive the scheme, execute it, provide institutional cover, benefit from its outcome, or knowingly conceal the truth.

Those who participate in wrongdoing cannot automatically escape responsibility simply because they did not initiate it. The official who manipulates a process, the intermediary who conceals evidence, and the beneficiary who knowingly profits from injustice may all have questions to answer.

A conspiracy does not become innocent because many people participate in it, and wrongdoing does not become legitimate because powerful people agree to protect one another.

Those who rely on mutual complicity for protection should understand the fragility of such alliances. When self-preservation takes precedence over loyalty, trusted partners may distance themselves, disclose concealed dealings, or abandon one another.

No position, connection, or promise of protection should be mistaken for immunity. Where credible evidence establishes participation in wrongdoing, everyone involved must be subject to appropriate scrutiny and lawful accountability.

Injustice Will Not Last Forever: The Unavoidable Possibility of Exposure

The fundamental error of those who perpetrate injustice is to confuse temporary advantage with permanent victory.

They assume that controlling present circumstances means controlling the future. They imagine that silencing a victim buries the truth, obstructing one avenue of redress closes every avenue, and escaping accountability today guarantees immunity tomorrow.

Power changes hands, alliances fracture, institutions evolve, and concealed information sometimes emerges when those responsible least expect it. Evidence may surface, witnesses may find the courage to speak, and investigations may reopen matters once considered beyond scrutiny.

At the appointed time, Nature will fight its cause through the unfolding of consequences, the persistence of truth, the courage of those who refuse to forget, and circumstances that no individual can permanently control.

What appears invincible today may become indefensible tomorrow. What is concealed through intimidation may emerge through investigation. What is protected by influence may eventually face the scrutiny it was designed to evade.

The wicked should therefore beware of the consequences of their vices. Abuse of power can destroy reputations, fracture relationships, undermine institutions, and expose those involved to legal consequences where the evidence and law warrant them.

The danger extends beyond exposure. Those who repeatedly abuse power may gradually destroy the trust, alliances, and institutional legitimacy upon which their own security depends. Those who knowingly participate in wrongdoing may discover that their supposed protection was merely temporary.

Let no one mistake delayed exposure for permanent concealment, or temporary impunity for eternal immunity.

The wiser course is to abandon wrongdoing, correct the harm, restore what can be restored, and submit to legitimate accountability before the consequences become more severe.

The Dangerous Consequences of Denying Justice

When people lose confidence in the institutions established to protect them, the damage extends far beyond individual victims. Public trust erodes, respect for authority diminishes, and citizens begin to question whether courts, regulators, professional bodies, and political institutions can deliver impartial outcomes.

Persistent injustice breeds resentment, deepens social divisions, and weakens the foundations of peaceful coexistence. When people are repeatedly denied fair hearings and credible remedies, they may begin to lose faith in lawful channels of reform.

This is where the warning attributed to John F. Kennedy becomes especially relevant: when peaceful reform is deliberately obstructed, the prospects for peaceful change diminish.

This is not an endorsement of violence; it is a warning about the dangers of making peaceful redress appear impossible. Those who suppress legitimate grievances may inadvertently create instability that threatens the entire society, including their own interests.

The appropriate response to injustice must remain firm and lawful: independent investigations, credible evidence, transparent proceedings, institutional reform, and persistent pursuit of redress.

Peace cannot be sustained by fear alone; it requires fairness, accountability, and confidence that justice is accessible to all.

A Warning to the Architects of Injustice

To those who manipulate institutions, persecute perceived opponents, suppress evidence, intimidate witnesses, and protect accomplices, the message is clear: do not become intoxicated by present influence and mistake it for permanent control.

History offers no guarantee that power will remain in the same hands, that alliances will endure, or that concealed wrongdoing will remain concealed. Circumstances change, records survive, and people who once remained silent may eventually speak.

If you have abused power, correct the wrong. If you have manipulated a process, submit it to independent scrutiny. If you have participated in misconduct, cease the conduct and cooperate with lawful accountability. If innocent people have suffered, acknowledge their grievances and pursue meaningful remedies.

The opportunity to do what is right should never be postponed until the power to do wrong has disappeared.

Justice Must Outlive Power

The travesty of justice is a moral indictment of those who choose influence over integrity, vengeance over fairness, and personal advantage over the common good. No society can build enduring peace upon deliberate unfairness, and no institution can maintain lasting credibility by protecting the guilty and persecuting the innocent.

Let the victims of injustice remain steadfast in pursuing legitimate redress. Let witnesses refuse to become accomplices. Let institutions recover their independence, and let every credible grievance receive a fair hearing.

Above all, let those who perpetrate injustice understand that the consequences of their actions may extend far beyond what they anticipate.

However injustice is perpetrated, it cannot be guaranteed to endure forever. At the appointed time, truth may emerge, secrets may be exposed, falsehoods may unravel, and every person whose participation in wrongdoing is established may be called to account. No partner in crime should presume to be beyond scrutiny.

There is, however, another lesson that those who abuse power must learn: human beings are not trees.

A tree may be threatened and remain rooted in the same place, unable to question its tormentor, challenge its circumstances, or seek its own protection. A human being, by contrast, possesses consciousness, dignity, agency, and an instinct for self-preservation.

When a person is threatened and every subsequent action, decision, and circumstance appears to reinforce that threat, the expectation of perpetual silence or passive submission becomes dangerously unrealistic. The natural desire to survive, resist oppression, and defend one’s dignity may intensify.

When every peaceful avenue is blocked, every legitimate grievance is ignored, and every action seems to reinforce a perceived threat, resistance may become inevitable—and its eventual outcome cannot be predicted.

This is not a glorification of violence or a justification for unlawful retaliation. It is a sober warning that those who deliberately corner others, disregard their grievances, and leave them feeling that their security and dignity are under relentless attack may unleash consequences they neither intended nor possess the power to control.

Wise leaders understand this danger and act before a crisis becomes irreversible. They listen, de-escalate tensions, correct injustices, respect lawful rights, and preserve peaceful avenues for resolution. Reckless leaders do the opposite, mistaking fear for loyalty and silence for surrender until the situation deteriorates beyond their ability to manage.

Those who make peaceful reform impossible must therefore recognise the dangers they create. Those who abuse power must understand its limits. And those who persist in wickedness must remember that neither influence nor intimidation can guarantee the outcome of tomorrow’s events.

“Justice must never become the servant of power; power must remain accountable to justice. No conspiracy is guaranteed secrecy, no position guarantees immunity, and no injustice deserves eternity.”

The time to choose integrity is now. The time to correct injustice is now. The time to preserve peace through fairness and accountability is now. A stitch in time saves nine so let’s right the wrong to avoid destroying what we wish to preserve.
